Five Elements: A Journey for Four Hands is an innovative piano duet program that reimagines the traditional four-hands format through the lens of the Five Elements—Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal. Featuring music by composers from Europe, Asia, and the Americas, the program offers a global perspective that connects diverse musical traditions through a shared expressive language. Rather than treating the Five Elements as abstract symbolism, this program approaches them as sonic archetypes—distinct ways of experiencing texture, motion, and energy in music. Each work embodies a unique element: fluidity and resonance, growth and lyricism, rhythmic vitality, structural clarity, and the physicality of sound itself. Together, these elements create a cohesive narrative across contrasting styles, inviting audiences to engage deeply with the music regardless of prior classical experience.

 

Audiences are introduced to how two performers share a single instrument, exploring coordination, ensemble communication, and the interpretive framework of the Five Elements. Beyond the concert stage, this project emphasizes meaningful community impact. It brings high-quality classical performance to a broad audience, fosters cross-cultural understanding through global repertoire, and provides approachable entry points for new listeners. Five Elements is designed not simply as a recital, but as a shared artistic experience that expands listening, bridges cultures, and celebrates the expressive possibilities of music

 

About the Piano Duo

 

Dr. Huixian Wu and Dr. Xiao Liang first met in Tallahassee, Florida, where both were pursuing doctoral degrees in Piano Performance at Florida State University. Although they studied in different studios and began their programs at different times, their shared musical sensibilities and outlook on life quickly brought them together.

 

Their artistic partnership grew naturally from a deep mutual understanding—one rooted in aligned musical instincts, aesthetic values, and a shared passion for collaboration. What began as friendship has evolved into a dynamic piano duo, shaped by both their common background and their individual artistic voices.

 

As pianists, they are keenly aware of the often solitary nature of the instrument—always just one performer and one piano for whole program. Through their duo, they seek to reimagine that experience: two performers at a single instrument, four hands working in dialogue, expanding the expressive possibilities of the piano.

 

Their work together explores not only ensemble coordination and virtuosity, but also a broader artistic vision—one that embraces connection, contrast, and creativity. Whether through traditional repertoire or concept-driven programs such as Five Elements: A Journey for Four Hands, Wu and Liang invite audiences into a shared musical space where collaboration becomes a source of new sound, energy, and imagination.

 

Dr. Xiao Liang is a pianist whose performance, teaching, and research span the United States, Italy, Finland, Malaysia, and China. She has received numerous honors, including First Prize at Italy’s Maccagno Young Artist Piano Festival and the AACE New York International Music Competition, the Best Etude Award at the USCI Young Artist Festival, and the Excellent Award at China’s CCTV Piano and Violin Competition.

 

A versatile musician, Liang performs as a soloist, collaborative pianist, and chamber musician. In 2021, she recorded MIDI piano accompaniments of Chinese art songs for the 4D Music Pocket Player app, where her recordings remain part of its permanent international library. She has also been invited as a collaborative pianist for the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention.

 

Liang’s research interests include cross-cultural repertoire, performance anxiety, and inclusive piano pedagogy. She has presented her work at national and international conferences, including NCKP, MTNA, ISME, FSMTA, the MTNA Collegiate Symposium, and CMS. She is a recipient of the VIVA Open Adopt Grant (Academic Library Consortium of Virginia), supporting the adoption of open educational resources for music instruction.

Liang holds a B.A. in Musicology from Beijing Normal University, an M.M. in Piano Performance from the University of Florida, and a Performance Diploma from Indiana University, where she studied with Emile Naoumoff, the last protégé of Nadia Boulanger. She earned her Doctor of Music in Piano Performance with a specialized certificate in Piano Pedagogy from Florida State University. She currently serves on the piano faculty at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, where she teaches class piano and music reading and serves as a collaborative pianist.

 

Dr. Huixian Wu is a pianist, educator, and collaborator based in the United States. An active performer and lecturer, Dr. Wu has appeared internationally as a soloist, collaborative pianist, and guest artist in the United States, China, Italy, and Spain. Her performance highlights include a solo appearance at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as a First Prize Winner of the American Protégé International Piano Competition, as well as invited recitals, lecture-recitals, and masterclasses at institutions including Tuskegee University, Ningbo University, Rutgers University, Nanjing Normal University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Florida State University.

 

Dr. Wu’s artistic and scholarly work reflects a strong commitment to cross-cultural repertoire, music education, and the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and music learning. She has presented nationally and internationally at conferences including the MTNA National Conference, NAMM National Conference, College Music Society conferences, the Asian Classical Music Initiative, and the Black Classical Composers Festival & Symposium. Her research interests include AI-assisted music pedagogy, group piano instruction, Taiwanese folk-song piano arrangements, and underrepresented voices in classical music.

 

As the Assistant Professor of Music and Program Director at Talladega College, Dr. Wucontributes to student advisement, program development, collaborative performance, and institutional music activities. Dr. Wu holds a Doctor of Music in Piano Performance from Florida State University. She also has a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Historical Keyboard Performance from UNCG and is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music through the Music Teachers National Association. With a career that bridges performance, pedagogy, and innovation, Dr. Wu is dedicated to expanding access to high-quality piano education, promoting culturally diverse repertoire, and preparing the next generation of musicians for a rapidly changing musical landscape.​
